When UV LED is light up, the photon from radiative recombination will lose its energy due to refractive index changes. Therefore, the choice of Lens material on UV LED will determine the ultimate LED emitting efficiency and reliability. Current common material used on UV LED is made from silicone, but because silicone material has worse UV and heat resistance than Quartz, it will have larger degradation in performance when used on UV LED. On the other hand, Quartz material have the advantages of anti-yellowing, better UV and heat resistance, better stress levels, hence it can have better UV light extraction. Because of the advantages, Quartz lens have been used more and more on UV LED especially in high end UV applications.
